We’ve been a little quiet on the GyrBlog front. We’ve been busy with work at Seagen (Nancy), keeping Nancy fed (Peter), several upgrade projects, and pondering the future of the pandemic.
We totally understand hesitancy about booking summer plans when there are so many unknowns about the future path of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also think that this might be the best summer ever to be in Southeast Alaska.

COVID Protocols
With the frustrating persistence of COVID-19, we wanted to share our updated travel protocols for Gyrfalcon’s 2022 Cruising Season. Our goal is to provide safe and infection-free experiences for our guests.
- Vaccinations: The Gyrfalcon is a fully-vaccinated and boosted ship. Our crew has received their vaccinations and our guests will be required to provide proof of vaccination two weeks prior to boarding the vessel, including recommended boosters.
- Testing: Each passenger must have a negative COVID test (administered by a health clinic/office) within 48 hours prior to boarding the Gyrfalcon, or will be required to take a rapid test with an approved kit provided by the traveler at the time of boarding. In addition, we reserve the right to require testing during the trip for anyone exhibiting potential covid-related symptoms. Travelers who are unable to travel due to positive results can request that their payments be crediting towards a future voyage. To minimize the chance of having your trip disrupted by covid, please limit your contacts for the week prior to your voyage.
- Alaska laws: You must check with Alaska.gov website well in advance of your trip to get updated information about travel to/from Alaska. Some local ordinances are more rigorous than state guidelines. You are responsible for checking on up-to-date information for your arrival and departure airport so that you will be prepared with any locally required documents, testing, and/or vaccination protocols.
We understand your concerns about the uncertainty of the future status of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we have updated our payment plan to allay concerns about financial repercussions:
- 50% payable at booking
- Balance (50%) payable by 2 weeks before boarding the vessel (along with proof of vaccination status)
- Funds received via PayPal
- For this upcoming summer, all payments can be put towards a future trip until the day of departure if the cancellation is required due to COVID

Hi Mary, Thanks for the compliments! There are several additional hoops to jump through to take passengers through Canada to Alaska, so at this point, we’re not planning on doing so. In terms of most beautiful spots in AK, it’s hard to say. I like the quiet secluded harbors for kayaking and wildlife viewing, but others like the majestic glaciers more. There’s always something new around the corner!
