FAQ, Part 2

This is a continuation of the previous post of Frequently Asked Questions about the Gyrfalcon.

What’s up with the roofs and the deck?  The coachhouse and pilothouse roofs have been primed and sanded.  Next is a coat of nonskid.  The mahogany railing is on around the coachhouse roof, and has also been primed and sanded.  Next up is one more coat of sanding primer, and then the finish coat in cranberry. 

Once the boat is waterproof, the plastic cocoon can come off.

The deck boards have been fastened down.  The nails that held the deck were reset, and in some places additional nails were driven. The area between the boards was opened up with a router and the caulk was checked or fixed.

580 tubes of Sikaflex marine caulking were injected into the spaces.  For reasons that are still unclear to us, they bought it small tubes.

They used this machine that, in 3 motions, used up an entire tube of caulk. After the caulk dried a bit, the decks were planed down, and then sanded. 

After the caulk thoroughly offgases in a few weeks, the decks will be painted.

 What is the galley like?  The galley is moving right along.  The stove was checked out by Viking, and it’s in good shape.  New cabinets were installed to the right of where the refrigerator will go, for an icemaker (below) and dishes (above).

Another cabinet for a microwave and storage was made for the port side of the stove.

The backsplash is stainless steel, the floor will be red marmoleum, and the cabinets will remain formica.  The counter has been ordered—it’s a black composite resin with embedded recycled glass beer bottles from Bend, OR.  Way cool.

Electrical runs are going in.

One of the coolest things is what is being called the “warming shelf.”  It’s a wooden shelf that runs the length of the galley between the galley and the salon.

On the salon side, there will be counter for eating, which will also have outlets to charge USB devices.

And where will you sleep?  Very cool things happening in the master stateroom as well.  Dave has constructed the area for the berth.

There are built-in nightstands and bookcases above the bed and along the starboard hull.  One thing that has bugged us is what to do with the 2 recesses in the ceiling that were left when the stairway was relocated and a doghouse hatch was eliminated when the salon was extended years ago.  We came up with the idea that we could put valances around the edge and use the spaces as indirect lighting.

That’s the executive summary of what has been happening in the last month or so. We will keep you posted as we get closer to moving onto the Gyr.
